Glass Shelter for Patio: Enjoying My Garden Year-Round
My garden was unusable in summer (too hot) and in winter (too cold during rare cool days). I built a glass shelter for patio — a glass-enclosed pergola. The structure has an aluminium frame, toughened glass panels, and a polycarbonate roof. It is 4m x 3m, with sliding glass doors on three sides. The cost was 25,000 AED. Now I use my garden every day, regardless of weather.
Benefits of a Glass-Enclosed Pergola
A glass shelter protects from sun, wind, and occasional rain. My glass shelter for patio has UV-blocking glass (reduces heat) and can be opened (sliding doors). In summer, I close the doors and use AC inside the shelter. In winter, I open the doors for fresh air. For a garden that faces west (afternoon sun), a glass shelter is essential. For a shaded garden (north-facing), it's optional.
Glass Types for Outdoor Shelters
Glass options: toughened (safety, shatters into small pieces), laminated (holds together if broken), and low-E (UV-blocking, heat-reducing). My glass shelter for patio uses 10mm toughened glass with a low-E coating. For a shelter that gets direct sun, low-E is essential (reduces heat gain by 50%). For a shaded shelter, standard toughened glass is fine. For a shelter near a play area, choose laminated glass (safety).
Roof Options for Glass Shelters
Roof options: polycarbonate (lightweight, affordable, less elegant), glass (heavy, expensive, elegant), or solid (aluminium or wood, blocks light). My glass shelter for patio has a 16mm twin-wall polycarbonate roof (insulated, blocks UV). For a shelter you'll use in summer, choose insulated roof (reduces heat). For a shelter you'll use only in winter, single-layer polycarbonate is fine. For a high-end look, choose a glass roof (but it will be hot).
Foundation and Flooring for Glass Shelters
The shelter needs a solid foundation. My glass shelter for patio is built on a concrete slab (poured specifically). The flooring is outdoor tiles (slip-resistant). For a ground-level garden, you can build on paving (no foundation needed). For a sloped garden, a concrete foundation is necessary. For a wooden deck, ensure the deck can support the weight (glass + frame = 500kg+).
Permits and Regulations for Glass Shelters
In Dubai, building a permanent structure may require a permit. My glass shelter for patio is classified as "temporary" (no permit needed) because it has no plumbing or electricity. For a shelter with AC or lighting, a permit may be required. For a villa within a community (Emirates Hills, Arabian Ranches), check with the community management. Some communities have restrictions on structures visible from the street.
Maintenance of Glass Shelters
Glass shelters need regular cleaning (dust, sand). I wash my glass shelter for patio with a pressure washer (low pressure) every 3 months. The aluminium frame is wiped with a damp cloth. The polycarbonate roof is cleaned with soap and water (no abrasive cleaners). For a shelter in a dusty area (Arabian Ranches), clean monthly. For a shelter with low-E coating, use non-abrasive cleaners (avoid scratching).
